Willie Mae McCloud was known for her kindness.
She was 56 years old.
Outgoing. Friendly. A familiar face on the east side of Columbus.
Although she struggled with mental health challenges and addiction, those who knew Willie Mae remembered her as someone who always spoke to people, laughed with neighbors, and made connections wherever she went.
She was often seen near the gas station or dollar store close to her apartment on Chatterton Road.
Then one day, she wasn’t there.
A Neighbor’s Concern Became a Nightmare
On May 23, 2005, neighbors realized they had not seen Willie Mae for more than 24 hours.
That was unusual.
Concerned, they walked to her apartment and knocked on the door.
No answer.
They knocked again.
Still nothing.
As worry turned into urgency, they forced their way inside.
There, they found Willie Mae lying on the floor.
She was wearing only a pair of panties.
Investigators determined she had been strangled.
Someone She Knew
What detectives discovered inside the apartment made the case even more troubling.
There were no signs of forced entry.
Nothing appeared to have been stolen.
Investigators believe whoever killed Willie Mae had access to her apartment.
They had a key.
After taking her life, that person locked the door behind them before leaving.
That key has never been recovered.
The evidence suggested this was not a random act of violence.
It was someone who knew her.
Someone she trusted enough to allow into her home.
Nearly Two Decades Without Answers
Nearly 20 years have passed since Willie Mae McCloud was murdered.
No arrests have been made.
Her family, friends, and community are still left with unanswered questions about who entered her apartment that day and why her life was taken.
Willie Mae was more than a cold case.
She was a daughter.

A neighbor.
A woman remembered for her kindness whose life ended inside the place where she should have been safest.
