It was supposed to be a simple night.
Picking up orders.
Making deliveries.
Earning money like so many other teenagers.
Rashawn Mackey was just 17 years old.
A Routine Pickup Turns Deadly
In the early morning hours of April 14, 2026, between approximately 2:13 a.m. and 2:30 a.m., Rashawn was at the BP gas station located at 2095 Metropolitan Parkway SW, near the intersection of Lakewood Avenue in southwest Atlanta.
He was there with a group of friends, picking up food delivery orders.
Inside the store, something changed.
According to investigators, Rashawn encountered a man who appeared to be upset about something.
That brief interaction quickly escalated.
Then came the gunfire.
Rashawn was shot in the chest.
When Atlanta police officers arrived, they found the teenager suffering from the gunshot wound.
Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was only 17 years old.
The Investigation
Witnesses reported seeing a man wearing a black hoodie run from the gas station toward a nearby McDonald’s and the Brookside Park apartment homes.
As of April 16, 2026, no arrests had been made, and the suspect had not been identified.
Investigators believe the encounter may have been completely random.
At this time, there is no evidence that Rashawn knew the person who shot him.
Detectives have been reviewing surveillance footage from the gas station while processing evidence recovered near a nearby apartment complex with the assistance of K-9 units.
A Teenager Simply Trying to Work
Rashawn was working.
He was doing what countless young people do every day—trying to earn an honest living.
Instead, his life was taken during an encounter that should have never happened.
A 17-year-old with dreams, responsibilities, and an entire future ahead of him never made it home.
