People in Palmetto knew the road by her family’s name.
The street was so closely connected to generations of the Brinson family that many simply referred to it as “Brinson Road.”
That was how deeply Machelle Brinson was rooted in her community.
She was 41 years old.
A mother of three.
A hardworking woman who spent years employed at the Tropicana plant in nearby Bradenton while raising her children on the same street she proudly called home.
Everything changed on November 19, 2007.
Violence Entered Her Home
According to investigators, a gunman forced his way into Machelle’s residence in the 1600 block of Sixth Avenue East in Palmetto.
Once inside, the intruder opened fire.
Machelle Brinson was shot and killed inside her own home.
The place where she had built a life and raised her children became the place where her life ended.
But the violence did not stop there.
A Daughter Forced to Witness the Unthinkable
Inside the home was Machelle’s 13-year-old daughter.
The child watched as her mother was murdered.
Before the nightmare was over, the gunman turned his attention toward her.
Authorities said the suspect pistol-whipped the young girl, leaving her with physical injuries and emotional trauma that would last long after the attack ended.
In a matter of moments, a child lost her mother while becoming a victim herself.
Years have passed.
No one has ever been arrested.
No one has ever been publicly charged.
A Family Still Waiting for Justice
Investigators have continued searching for answers in Machelle Brinson’s murder.
Her case has even been featured in Florida’s Cold Case Playing Card Program, an initiative that places unsolved homicide cases on playing cards distributed within correctional facilities in hopes that someone with knowledge of the crime will finally come forward.
Detectives believe someone knows exactly what happened inside that home.
Someone knows who forced their way through the door.
Someone knows who pulled the trigger.
Someone knows who assaulted a 13-year-old child before disappearing into silence.
More than a decade later, Machelle Brinson’s family continues waiting for the answers they have deserved since that November night.
