Her 13-Year-Old Daughter Watched Her Die — Then the Gunman Pistol-Whipped the Child
Palmetto, Florida — November 19, 2007
Machelle Brinson was so deeply rooted in her Palmetto community that people around the area referred to the street where her family lived as “Brinson Road.”
She was 41 years old.
A mother of 3.
A woman who worked hard, raised her children and built a life in the same community where she would ultimately lose it.
Machelle had worked for years at the Tropicana plant in Bradenton and was known as a familiar, steady presence among family, friends and neighbors.
Then, on November 19, 2007, violence entered her home.
A Gunman Forced His Way Inside
According to investigators, a gunman forced his way into Machelle’s residence on the 1600 block of Sixth Avenue East in Palmetto.
Once inside, he opened fire.
Machelle was shot and killed.
But the violence did not end with her murder.
Her 13-year-old daughter was inside the home and witnessed the attack on her mother.
Then the gunman turned on the child.
Authorities said he pistol-whipped the girl, leaving her injured and traumatized after she had just watched her mother die.
No Arrest Has Ever Been Made
Years passed.
No arrest followed.
No charges were filed.
And Machelle’s family was left carrying the weight of a murder that shattered their lives in a matter of moments.
Her daughter survived, but the violence inside that home left wounds that extended far beyond the injuries she suffered that night.
Machelle’s Case Became Part of Florida’s Cold Case Playing Card Program
Investigators have continued seeking information about Machelle’s murder.
Her case was featured in Florida’s cold case playing card program, which distributes cards containing information about unsolved crimes inside correctional facilities.
The idea is simple: keep the cases in front of people who may know something and encourage anyone with information to finally come forward.
Because whoever killed Machelle entered her home, fired the shots that ended her life and attacked her child before leaving.
More than 18 years later, that person has still not been publicly held accountable.
