What began as an ordinary evening between two best friends ended in a tragedy that devastated two families and an entire community.
On the night of June 24, 2026, 13-year-old Jonah Tanner and 16-year-old Damarion Jones were inside a home on Lincoln Avenue in Syracuse, New York.
They would never leave.
What Investigators Determined
At approximately 9:13 p.m., Syracuse Police officers responded to reports of gunfire at a residence located at 198 Lincoln Avenue.
Inside, they found both boys suffering from gunshot wounds.
According to the Syracuse Police Department and Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick, investigators determined that 16-year-old Damarion accidentally discharged a 9mm handgun, striking his best friend, Jonah.
Authorities believe that, overcome with immediate guilt and heartbreak over what had happened, Damarion then turned the gun on himself.
He died at the scene.
Jonah was rushed to Upstate University Hospital in critical condition.
Despite every effort to save him, doctors later declared the 13-year-old brain dead.
In one final act of generosity, Jonah’s family made the heartbreaking decision to donate his organs so that other lives could be saved.
Two Families, One Heartbreaking Goodbye
The two boys were described by their families as inseparable.
They spent their time together, supported one another, and shared a friendship that those closest to them said was truly special.
Jonah’s family remembered him as a young boy who loved football, fashion, and had a personality that could light up a room.
Damarion’s mother described her son as being full of love, always willing to help others, and someone whose kindness touched everyone he met.
As Syracuse mourned, community members gathered for a prayer vigil to honor both boys.
In a remarkable display of compassion amid unimaginable grief, the Tanner and Jones families announced plans to hold a joint funeral so the best friends could be laid to rest together.
