Jane Kuria came to America believing she was giving her children something every parent hopes for.
Safety.
After the death of her husband, Jane left Kenya in 2001 and brought her children—Isabella, Annabelle, and Jeremy—to the United States. The family first settled in Boston before eventually making their home in Powder Springs, Georgia.
She worked hard to build a new life.
According to reports, one of the reasons Jane left Kenya was to protect her daughters from female genital mutilation, a practice she feared they could face if they remained in their homeland.
She believed she had found a place where her family could finally live without fear.
Everything she fought to protect was taken from her during the summer of 2007.
A Family’s Worst Nightmare
On July 30, 2007, relatives became concerned after they were unable to reach Jane.
Calls went unanswered for days.
On August 1, Jane’s niece, Diana, drove to the family’s home to check on them.
The cars were still parked outside.
The back door was unlocked.
Inside, blood stained the floor.
When officers entered the residence, they discovered 47-year-old Jane Kuria, 19-year-old Isabella Kuria, and 16-year-old Annabelle Kuria dead inside the home.
All three had been beaten to death.
The home Jane believed would keep her family safe had become the scene of one of Georgia’s most disturbing unsolved crimes.
Two Children Survived
Investigators also found two boys alive inside the home.
Eight-year-old Jeremy Kuria and 11-year-old Peter, Jane’s nephew, had both suffered severe injuries during the attack.
They were rushed for medical treatment and placed into medically induced comas.
When the boys eventually regained consciousness, detectives hoped they would be able to identify the person responsible.
Instead, both had little or no memory of the attack.
Jeremy later recalled seeing a man wearing an African-style shirt and remembered hearing someone speaking in their native Kenyan language before losing consciousness.
Those memories have never been enough to identify a killer.
Nearly Two Decades Without Justice
Detectives reportedly questioned a man Jane frequently spoke with, but he was never publicly identified as a suspect.
No arrests have ever been made.
Nearly two decades later, the murders of Jane, Isabella, and Annabelle Kuria remain unsolved.
The surviving members of the family continue waiting for answers about who entered that home and carried out such a brutal attack.
Jane crossed an ocean hoping to protect her children.
Instead, the place she believed would offer them safety became the place where three members of her family lost their lives.
