Destiny Bucknor was only 19 years old.
She had already fought battles that many people never have to face.
An honors high school graduate, Destiny had survived a severe struggle with lupus and was looking toward the future. She dreamed of becoming a firefighter and building a life dedicated to helping others.
Instead, her future was stolen on the Fourth of July.
A Holiday Celebration Turns Deadly
At approximately 7:15 p.m. on July 4, 2023, Destiny was riding as a passenger in a bright green Polaris Slingshot in the 2900 block of Northwest 8th Street in unincorporated Broward County, near Fort Lauderdale.
As the vehicle traveled westbound, someone opened fire.
Bullets tore into the Slingshot.
Destiny was struck by the gunfire.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital but did not survive.
The driver was not injured.
Investigators believe Destiny was not the intended target.
A Case Stalled by Silence
What makes the case even more heartbreaking is that detectives say there were approximately 10 people in the area who had been interacting with the shooter moments before the gunfire erupted.
Yet despite those potential witnesses, investigators say cooperation has been extremely limited.
More than two years later, no arrests have been made.
No suspects have been publicly identified.
And the motive for the shooting remains unknown.
A Family Still Waiting
Destiny’s mother, Brittany Bucknor, has refused to let her daughter’s name be forgotten.
She continues to fight for answers while expressing frustration over what she believes has become a stalled investigation.
Her family is still waiting for the phone call that could finally bring justice.

She should have had the opportunity to live the life she fought so hard to keep.
