Set on Fire and Left to Die, David Brown Went Unidentified for 28 Years

Atlanta, Georgia — April 24, 1996

In a vacant lot in southeast Atlanta, a man stumbled through flames screaming for help.

His body was burning.

His skin had been destroyed so badly that no one could identify him.

Yet before he died, he was able to tell investigators something about what had happened.

According to police, the man said someone had come up behind him, robbed him and set him on fire.

“They robbed me.”

Those would become some of the last words he ever spoke.

He was rushed to a hospital, but his burns were too severe.

He died without authorities knowing his name.

For the next 28 years, he would be known only as a John Doe.

His Own Family Could Not Recognize Him

Investigators allowed families searching for missing loved ones to view the unidentified man’s remains, hoping someone might recognize him.

But the damage caused by the fire was catastrophic.

One of those families was searching for a missing man named David Brown.

David’s mother heard reports about the unidentified burn victim and sent David’s sister to the hospital to determine whether the man could possibly be her brother.

She looked at him.

She said no.

The fire had caused so much damage that David’s own sister could not recognize him.

And for nearly 3 decades, his family continued without knowing that the unidentified man they had been shown was David all along.

DNA Finally Gives John Doe His Name

In 2024, the case was taken on by the DNA Doe Project.

Using forensic genetic genealogy, researchers were finally able to restore the identity that had been lost for 28 years.

The man found burning in that southeast Atlanta vacant lot was David Brown.

His mother had died without ever learning what happened to her son.

His sister later spoke publicly about the devastating realization that she had unknowingly looked directly at her brother nearly 30 years earlier.

“He’s not no missing John Doe,” she said. “He’s not that no more. He had a family that loved him.”

David finally had his name back.

But identifying him answered only one part of a mystery that began in 1996.

Who Set David Brown on Fire?

Investigators said witnesses had last seen David with 2 women known only as “Tash” and “Shan.”

Both women were reportedly questioned during the investigation.

Neither was charged with David’s murder.

And despite David surviving long enough to tell authorities that he had been robbed, no one has ever been held accountable for setting him on fire.

For 28 years, his family did not even know where he was.

Now they know.

David Brown was not simply an unidentified man found dying in an Atlanta vacant lot.

He was a son.

He was a brother.

He had a family searching for him and a family that loved him.
