Martha Jane Maxwell Fought for Her Life Inside Her Own Home

Elizabethtown, North Carolina — January 20, 1994

Martha Jane Maxwell spent her life caring for other people.

As a nursing assistant, helping others was not just her job. Friends and family remembered her as a devoted mother, a hardworking woman, and someone who consistently put the people she loved first.

She was 51 years old when her life was taken.

Martha Is Found Inside Her Home

On the morning of January 20, 1994, Martha was at her home on Blue Road in Elizabethtown. She was last seen alive around 8:45 a.m.

A few hours later, at approximately 12:30 p.m., her husband, Johnny Maxwell, returned home.

Almost immediately, something felt wrong.

The storm door was unlocked.

Martha never left it unlocked when she was home alone.

As Johnny entered the residence, he discovered Martha lying just inside the front door.

She had been stabbed multiple times.

Her throat had been cut.

Evidence of a Violent Struggle

Investigators later determined that Martha had fought desperately to survive.

Defensive wounds covered her hands and wrists, evidence of a violent struggle between Martha and the person who attacked her. Inside the home, blood spatter stained the den, and furniture had been overturned.

Then-Elizabethtown Police Chief Michael Royston stated that Martha had likely been killed two to three hours before she was found.

The attack was brutal, and more than three decades later, no one has been held accountable.

Questions About Another Local Murder

Over the years, Martha’s family continued searching for answers.

Her daughter, Hilda Faye McKoy, publicly shared her belief that her mother’s killer may have been connected to another murder that occurred in the area around the same time.

Just weeks before Martha’s death, Judy Atkinson Jones was murdered in Elizabethtown.

McKoy stated that a man she believed may have had information about both cases was dating her younger sister at the time and that Martha strongly disapproved of the relationship.

No arrest has ever been made in Martha’s case, and authorities have not publicly named a suspect.

The questions surrounding both murders remain.

More Than Three Decades Without Justice

Martha was a mother of five children.

She was a woman whose life revolved around caring for others and whose family should have had the chance to watch her grow older.

Instead, her life ended in violence inside her own home.

More than 30 years have passed since Martha was killed, but her family is still waiting for the truth about who attacked her and why.
