THE UNSOLVED MURDER OF KORY NATHANIEL FREDERICKS

Spartanburg County, South Carolina | June 22, 2025

Kory Nathaniel Fredericks had his entire future ahead of him.

The 17-year-old Duncan, South Carolina, resident had recently graduated from Dorman High School, where he excelled as a standout hurdles athlete on the track and field team. His hard work had earned him a college scholarship, and he had recently enlisted in the Army Reserves as he prepared to begin the next chapter of his life.

Instead, that future was stolen in the early morning hours of June 22, 2025.

At approximately 2:47 a.m., a large crowd had gathered in the parking lot of Academy Sports + Outdoors on Peachwood Center Drive in Spartanburg County when gunfire suddenly erupted.

When the shooting ended, Kory had been fatally shot. A second victim was critically injured.

As panic spread through the parking lot, witnesses fled the scene.

Investigators with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office launched a homicide investigation and reviewed surveillance footage from the area. Although the cameras captured the large crowd gathered before the shooting, authorities said the video quality was too poor to clearly identify the person responsible.

Over the past year, detectives have continued pursuing leads, but as of June 2026, no arrests have been made. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office says there is currently insufficient evidence to support criminal charges, and the investigation remains active.

On the one-year anniversary of Kory’s death, his family launched a heartbreaking campaign to keep his case in the public eye. Community billboards were erected throughout the area, urging anyone who witnessed the shooting or recorded video that night to come forward.

Investigators believe someone in that crowd knows exactly what happened.

Someone may have recorded the shooting or captured critical moments before or after the gunfire.

One piece of information could finally provide Kory’s family with the answers they have waited a year to receive.

Anyone with information regarding the murder of Kory Nathaniel Fredericks is urged to contact the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office at 864-503-4555.
